Symmetry in Home Design. One of the most distinguishing features of interior spaces and homes decorated in a formal style is the symmetry of windows, furniture, artwork, and flooring. These elements are most often arranged in exact pairs on a straight axis around the room.
The details of formal style decorating are: Pairs of furniture and accessories, shiny wood, fabric, and metals, tall windows with elaborate coverings, antique furniture and accessories, original oil paintings and lithographs, persian carpets and Oriental Rugs, chandeliers and light fixtures of crystal or brass, decorative trims of tassels and fringe, carved details on wood furniture.
For example, a colored accent wall can liven up the space or make the size of the room feel bigger. Use color theory and other techniques to choose the right one. You can also take your interior project one step forward by expressing your own personal flair, whether it's rustic, shabby chic, tropical, or western. Consider current decorating trends, how to incorporate furniture and accessories you love, and how you want your area to feel.
With all this said remember that too many patterns in the same room can be a bit overwhelming and contribute to visual clutter. Be sure to use a solid color (or a few solid colors) to create balance and pull all the patterns together. When it comes to mixing patterns the most important thing to remember is to have fun and stay true to the looks you like best. When you do, chances are good that it will all come together without too much difficulty.
