Handrails, an additional small step to designing a house for seniors is to install handrails for any and all stairs. Slipping on a set of stair is easy to do once your footing begins to become unsure. (The stairs are also an important place to add more lighting.) The added aid of stair rails is one way of designing a house for the elderly that will make an older person safer.
The kitchen design should allow for plenty of counter work space and a functional work triangle. Cabinets are also very important for use in storage. Ideally, space planning should assume and account for two cooks to work together without feeling congested. Pantry’s are also a must and should be included in this space as well.
They are tough enough to handle wheel scratches. Cabinets and sinks are lowered to accommodate the handicapped person’s reach. It also benefit elderly persons who are vertically challenged. Rooms are also larger than normal so that occupants can move freely without bumping into walls, furniture, or other obstacles.
People, both old and young, can actually enjoy the features of a universal design for homes. The extra space can actually be enhanced by natural decors to give the whole house a relaxed feeling. In fact, this design is actually dubbed as the house of the future due to the features and the advantages it has.
