Size and Scale. When using patterns it's important to think about size and scale. The best looking rooms have a mix. For example, try using a large pattern on a large area such as window curtains or on the walls; medium scale patterns on furniture; and small patterns on small items such as throw pillows. (These rules aren't set in stone, use your judgment based on the room, the pattern, and the place you want to use it).
Tables. Small distressed tables, even if distressed and downright ugly, can be dressed up with white or floral sheets. Drape the sheets over the table and allow to pool on the floor. It adds a touch of romance and it's cheap. So, as you can see, Victorian doesn't have to break your piggy bank. There are inexpensive ways to design the nostalgic look you want. Thinking creatively about furniture and accessories can bring your room to life with touches of the romance of another century.
The overall ambiance of traditional decor is homey, understated, and non-jarring. As in formal settings, furniture in a traditional room is often arranged on straight axis within the room. The sofa will directly face or sit perpendicular to the fireplace and a bed will back up to the center of the longest bedroom wall.
