Inexpensive Alternative: Ready-Made Curtain Panels. Ready-made window treatments have come a long way. Whereas they used to be plain and only available in a few colors and styles, they now come in tons of different varieties. If you want to save money but you still want a custom look, find some ready-made panels and then update them to suit your room. You can sew on trim, add a ribbon detail with double-sided fabric tape, or even alter the size if you're handy with a sewing machine.
Use Items in a New Way. One of the easiest ways to accessorize a room for free is by using items you already have but in a different way. For instance, use a side chair as a bedside table.
In place of silk, velvet, or satin, choose synthetic, washable fabrics for window treatments. Formally dressed windows usually have draperies to the floor with contrasting trim topped by a valance or cornice box of perfect proportions. Lighting fixtures of crystal or brass with delicate silk shades create a formal look. An inexpensive chandelier can be spray-painted to get the metallic look that's desired. Chandeliers look elegant and formal in a large living room, formal dining room, bedroom, or small powder room.
During the first few years of a baby's life, you don't really need a swing, johnny jump-up, buggy, stroller, walker, jogger, bassinette, cradle, crib, travel crib, playpen, car seat, carrier, and doubles of everything for grandma's and grandpa's house. You'll use each thing very rarely and then have to store it when the baby grows out of it. Decide what pieces are essential.
