Without a structured philosophy to get you from point A to point Z, you may find yourself lacking one or both aspects of this philosophy in the design process. There is nothing worse than a home with a horrible form and flawed function. The “form follows function” philosophy governs good house designs.
That said, when you’re planning a design project, the first thing you should consider is what you need your newly designed room to do. For example, in the picture above, you can see that in addition to the sleeping space, there’s a seating area that can be used for reading. Before you start on a new project, it’s important to take inventory of the existing design. In particular, you should make note of all the things you like about the room. Not only will this give you a realistic view of your starting point, but it will also help you decide if there are any features that you can incorporate into the new look.
Master bedroom with a sitting area – Maybe the one space that shares the top spot with the kitchen. The master bedroom should have enough space to accommodate a queen or king size bed with room to spare. In addition, a sitting area is a bonus within the master retreat. At minimum a couple of chairs and an end table can occupy the space. A more elaborate sitting room has a fireplace with shelving and place for a television.
Adding lamps and overhead lighting will help keep your loved one(s) from bumping into coffee tables and other objects in the darkly lit rooms. Make sure that the power to the various forms of lighting are easy to access. Having a lighting switch close to each room’s entry is essential.
