Architectural Features for Formal Style. A formal style of decorating fits best in a home with high ceilings, large and tall windows, and architectural features such as a large fireplace mantle or beautifully paneled walls. Since formal style interiors are decorated to attract attention, highly polished woods, glistening mirrors, luxurious fabrics, and sparkling crystal chandeliers are the norm.
Using the color black adds a focal point of color that grounds, anchors, and adds a sophisticated look to a room. Black in accessories, light fixtures, trims, paint, or in one bold piece of furniture will help to catch the eye and sharpen any decorating scheme. It will serve as an outline that sets off specific areas or objects. Black by itself is striking!
If you love the look of elegant Ritz-Carlton hotels or public buildings such as the White House, you're probably drawn to the formal style of decorating. While homes today are not usually constructed with 18" deep baseboard moldings, hand-laid herringbone-patterned hardwood floors, or elaborately carved plaster ceiling and wall decorations, there are elements of the formal style of decorating that can be added to more modern homes.
But painting the walls a solid color isn't the only answer. Imagine what a difference it would make if the ceiling in your living room was suddenly painted in a funky pattern, or all of the trim was painted a color other than white. Imagine a half-painted wall, or a feature wall. No matter what you decide, paint equals an instant transformation.
