Use on pillows, tablecloths, curtains, or upholstery for small occasional chairs. Victorian homes tended to be overly decorated, and this included placing doilies and lace over nearly every surface. This helped reflect the rich status of the homeowner and showed off their style and taste.
Choose lush-looking durable fabrics in place of silks and velvets. Feature one or two uncomfortable formal pieces, but place more practical pieces of furniture around the room for everyday use. Incorporate formal trim and fringe on sensible upholstered furniture, comfortable pillows, draperies, and valances.
Using the color black adds a focal point of color that grounds, anchors, and adds a sophisticated look to a room. Black in accessories, light fixtures, trims, paint, or in one bold piece of furniture will help to catch the eye and sharpen any decorating scheme. It will serve as an outline that sets off specific areas or objects. Black by itself is striking!
Repurpose Thrift Store Items. Thrift store items have come a long way when it comes to people's perceptions. Second-hand stores are finally being appreciated as wonderful places to find unique and interesting items for your home - and a great find is something worth bragging about! Often it takes a little work on your part as many items require a little upcycling (new hardware, a fresh coat of paint, new upholstery, a little sanding and staining, etc.) but great thrift store finds can save you money and give your home tons of character.
