With modern technology bringing unprecedented access to travel and information, the world that we live in is experiencing globalization at an unprecedented rate. As always, this ongoing discussion between cultures and countries is being very clearly depicted through modern design. Ghanaian masks, Tibetan textiles and Moroccan rugs are all among the many items that are finding their ways, not only into some of the most revered design and architecture magazines, but into our homes as well. But when talking about global design, there's more at stake than just a beautiful home. For generations, the conversation on global design has been moved by larger forces such as the desire for trade, religious and philosophical exchanges and varying foreign policies – all of which continue to move the dialogue today.
For starters, casual rooms have simple details, textured elements in fabrics and accessories, restful horizontal lines, soft upholstery, low-luster surfaces, and arrangements that avoid perfect symmetry. Details are simple, and elements are rectangular or softly curved. A room decorated in a casual style is the perfect place to have a touch of whimsey. Use an old or reconstructed birdhouse or wooden candlestick for a lamp base, stack pieces of old luggage for a side table, use a low vintage ironing board for a coffee table.
Decorating is a very personal exercise (or at least it should be). You decide what items go into your home, from the furniture, to the rugs, to the lights, to the accessories – it’s totally up to you. But despite the fact that you’re free to decorate with whatever you want, there are a few essential items every home should have. Having these items in your home will ensure that no matter what the style it will always look its best.
Clawfoot Tub. Elegant, indulgent and the ultimate relaxation spot, every traditional home should make room for a clawfoot tub. Just a quick browse through the literal thousands of tubs from Vintage Tub & Bath will have you dreaming of essential oils, candles and a long soak. Crisp White Sheets. Okay, okay, we'll admit that just about any bedroom setup can benefit from a set of crisp white sheets, but they do have a certain ability to conjure up images of fancy hotel rooms and perfectly folded hospital corners. You can't go wrong with white bed linens, and we happen to think the best (and most Instagram-friendly) sheets come from California cool brand, Parachute Home.
