For starters, casual rooms have simple details, textured elements in fabrics and accessories, restful horizontal lines, soft upholstery, low-luster surfaces, and arrangements that avoid perfect symmetry. Details are simple, and elements are rectangular or softly curved. A room decorated in a casual style is the perfect place to have a touch of whimsey. Use an old or reconstructed birdhouse or wooden candlestick for a lamp base, stack pieces of old luggage for a side table, use a low vintage ironing board for a coffee table.
Crisp white bed linens are perfect for the bedroom. Add a black and white striped bed skirt, pillows, and a comfortable black chair. For seasonal changes, have a variety of pillows in different colors on hand. Pink, yellow, or soft green works great for summer, while red, hunter green, or even shimmering gold or silver looks great for winter. When shopping for fabrics, keep an eye out for colorful prints or plaids with touches of black. Then add more black to the room with lamps, table trims, frames and mats, pillows, and door and hardware.
Make Your Own Artwork. What you put on the walls has a big impact on the room, and there are a ton of things you can do for cheap.Try framing wallpaper or fabric samples, create washi tape art, or frame pages from old books. Or display your kids artwork by either framing it or hanging it from clothes hangers (it sounds wacky but it makes for a fun display!). The idea that artwork has to be expensive is a myth, so try making your own and don't be afraid to get creative.
When it comes to interior decorating black has gotten a bad rap. People tend to think decorating with black is dark and depressing. But this isn't the case.
