That doesn't mean they all have to be made up of the same colors, they just have to share some similar colors and tones. While this idea may seem intimidating to some people it needn't be. Learn to trust your eye. You'll instinctively know if something looks good to you or if it doesn't seem quite right.
Typical characteristics of an eclectic style space: Calm mix of periods and styles, neutral background colors, unexpected use of materials and/or items, uniqueness in art and furnishings, a “pulling together” through pattern, shape, texture, finish or color, everything has its place but it may look cluttered, old easily mixed in with new, handmade items or items with sentimental value, celebration of contrasts. If you want to put together a casual style room, learn the basic elements that combine to create a truly casual room.
Windows are left uncovered to take advantage of natural light. Wooden surfaces such as cupboards, door and window frames, shutters or ceiling beams are often left with a natural patina. Colors in Tuscan style decorating come from the earth. Terracotta, brick, ochre, greens, and golden yellow are seen everywhere. Blue and green are added to contribute a visual cooling effect in areas with hot weather. Surfaces that have been painted add a dash of color even when the finish wears off.
In interior design, mixing patterns is one of the more advanced things that you can learn to do. Doing it well can be the difference between designing the room of your dreams and going back to the drawing board. The first thing you'll need to know is this: Patterns don't have to match. I repeat, patterns do not have to match. Like with many elements of decorating they simply have to coordinate with and complement each other, and there are any number of ways for that to happen.
