Or decorate with jewelry that is normally hidden away in a drawer. Mount some vintage brooches in a shadow box, hang necklaces on a decorative ladder, or display just about anything in a pretty bowl. You can also take old china and display it. Hang pretty vintage plates on the wall or even display your silverware. A silver bowl or gravy boat looks very pretty when filled with flowers.
In general, a traditional room will use a mix of vertical lines with more restful horizontal lines. Gentle curves are seen in furniture, pillows, and accessories. Fabrics in a traditional room are generally neither too shiny nor too textured. Florals, plain colors, muted plaids, understated stripes, geometrics, tone-on-tone and small all-over patterns are common.
Details on window treatments are simple. Contrast lining fabric peeking out from the sides, cording or wide contrast banding, or tab tops with buttons or ribbon details dress up the window but not too much! Add a simple swag of fabric or fabric tie-backs if you must. Floors in a casual style room are hardwood, tile, stone, or stained concrete. If carpet is used, it should not be too plush. Rather chose sisal, berber, or long, shaggy styles or subtle geometric woven patterns.
Inexpensive Alternative: DIY Art. Some art purists shudder at the thought, but DIY artwork can be a great way to add something personal to a space. You don't have to be a great artist, you just have to be creative. Consider framing some pieces of fabric or wallpaper, your kids artwork, or your own photographs.
