The Victorian era, named for Queen Victoria, who ruled England from 1837 to 1901. This era was marked by peace and prosperity in England, and inspired a new wave of engineering and design. In fact, the influence was felt far and wide, including the United States. You can still see evidence of Victorian-era architecture in cities like San Francisco, where ornate details and color are key.
If black is your dominant color (the wall color for example) add some architectural details like crown molding, a picture rail or wainscoting to keep it from looking flat. Use an accent color in a black room to punch it up and keep it from being too stark. Anything goes. Add a bold pink or orange for excitement, baby blue or green for softness, or try gold or silver for glamorous sophistication (mirrored furniture and crystal accents are also great for that "Hollywood glam" look).
Artwork of country, casual themes is simply framed using wooden frames, either painted or stained. The dining table of a room decorated in a casual style would be set with rugged stoneware, textured woven or fabric placemats, coordinated napkins, heavy glasses, stainless flatware, wooden bowls, and accessories of iron or pewter. The colors of the table should enhance the theme of the room, using either bold floral patterns, plain pieces, or soft, comfortable pastels.
Embellish What You Already Have. If you want to up your decorating ante sometimes all you need to do is embellish what you already have. For example, try adding a ribbon detail to plain lampshades, add new trim to your existing throw pillows, or add nailhead trim to pieces of furniture.
